MERV Ratings Explained: Which Rating Do You Need?

What Is a MERV Rating?

MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value. It's a standardized scale developed by ASHRAE (the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers) that measures how effectively an air filter captures particles of different sizes.

The scale runs from 1 to 20. The higher the MERV rating, the smaller the particles the filter can capture — and the more filtration you get.

MERV Rating Breakdown

MERV 1–4: Basic Filtration

These are the cheapest fiberglass filters you'll find at a hardware store. They catch large particles like dust bunnies and lint but do very little for air quality. Not recommended for most homes.

MERV 5–8: Standard Residential

This is the range most disposable pleated filters fall into. They capture mold spores, dust mite debris, and pet dander. Adequate for average homes without allergy concerns.

MERV 9–12: Better Residential / Light Commercial

Filters in this range capture finer particles including auto emissions, lead dust, and some bacteria. Good for homes with pets, mild allergies, or anyone who wants noticeably cleaner air.

MERV 13–16: Hospital / Superior Residential

These filters capture very fine particles including smoke, bacteria, and virus carriers. MERV 13 is now recommended by the EPA for homes during wildfire smoke events. However, filters this dense can restrict airflow in residential HVAC systems not designed for them.

MERV 17–20: HEPA / Cleanroom

Used in hospitals, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and cleanrooms. Not suitable for standard residential HVAC systems.

Does a Higher MERV Rating Always Mean Better?

Not necessarily. A very high MERV rating can restrict airflow through your HVAC system, forcing your blower motor to work harder. This can increase energy costs and even damage your system over time.

For most homes, a MERV rating between 8 and 11 hits the sweet spot of effective filtration without straining your system.

What About Washable Electrostatic Filters?

Washable electrostatic filters use static electricity to attract and trap particles — similar in principle to how a balloon attracts hair after being rubbed. They don't always carry a traditional MERV rating, but they perform comparably to MERV 8–11 filters while lasting a lifetime.

Which MERV Rating Do You Need?

• Standard home, no pets, no allergies: MERV 8
• Pets or mild seasonal allergies: MERV 9–10
• Asthma, severe allergies, or immunocompromised household members: MERV 11
